The term “alternative” or “historic” processes refers to photographic printing processes or methods that predate the use of gelatin silver and color (traditional film, chemistry, and paper) photography. These methods include Cyanotypes, Albumen Printing, Kallitypes, Palladium, Platinum, Gum Bichromate (or Dichromate), Gum Oil, Van Dyke, and Wet Plate. There are many other processes out there but these are the most common. Some of these labels comprise multiple variants and some of these processes can be combined. These slides show some of my own alternative/historic process printing. When viewing these prints, keep in mind that the actual tone of the prints can vary, e.g., not all palladium prints of the same image will look the same.
